More Than Just Metal
While metal braces are still the most popular form of treatment we offer, they're far from the only game in town. New advances in orthodontic technology have created exciting alternatives to standard braces that provide the same reliability while also improving aesthetic appeal and comfort. Continue reading below to learn about all the types of braces we offer.
This is what most people think of when they hear the word "braces." Made from high-grade stainless steel, metal braces are composed of metal bands that wrap around the back molars, metal brackets cemented to the front of the teeth, and a thin, springy archwire that runs through the brackets that applies a gentle, constant pressure to teeth. Metal braces are a durable, reliable, and cost-effective form of treatment. They are now smaller and more comfortable than ever before. And, despite technological advances, they're still the most popular form of orthodontic treatment.
Clear braces use the same mechanics and techniques as metal braces, but the brackets are made from a clear composite material. This lets them blend in with your teeth, providing a discreet and aesthetically pleasing treatment option. Keep in mind that while they're covert, they're also slightly more fragile and expensive than metal braces. And although the brackets themselves don't stain, the translucent elastics that keep the archwire in do. This means you'll need to avoid things like coffee, wine, and tea.
Lingual braces offer all the power of traditional braces, but do not interfere with your smile’s appearance. That's because the brackets are mounted to the inside (tongue side) of your teeth, making treatment completely invisible on the outside! Note—while lingual braces are strong and discreet, they're also significantly more expensive than standard braces and require a bit more time to get used to.
Damon brackets utilize a sliding-door technology known as “self-ligation.” These brackets allow the wire of your braces to slide back and forth within the bracket to provide a more efficient treatment. With braces relying on Damon brackets you’ll experience less friction and, thus, greater comfort. They can also reduce treatment time and (as they require fewer adjustments than traditional braces) you won’t have to come into our Chicago or Vernon Hills office for check-ins as frequently.
Unlike traditional braces, this form of orthodontic treatment does not rely on a system of brackets and wires. The Invisalign System is made up of a series of clear overlay templates called aligners that are generated by advanced computer simulations and are customized to gradually move your teeth. These aligners are comfortable, removable, and practically invisibly. Each one is worn for a few weeks at a time; then your orthodontist provides a new aligner set. As Invisalign only corrects a sub-set of adult bite problems, it might not be a suitable choice for every patient. Schedule a consultation with your orthodontist today to find out if Invisalign is the right path for you.
